“I want to believe that what we have done is right.” Undine Stransky was born on December 17th, 2022. Her parents, Flora (née Strøm) and Harry Stransky, are both doctors working for the local hospital in Ashwater, Washington. She has two siblings, an older sister named Nina Stransky (who is 2 years older than Undine), and a younger brother named Aither Stransky. Unfortunately, Aither Stransky dies at the young age of 5 in a boating accident, while on a camping trip at Crater Lake with Nina, Undine, and Harry. A few months after the death of Aither, the family falls apart and the parents decide to split up. Two months later, they file for divorce. Harry takes custody of Undine, and Flora takes custody of Nina. Undine has not seen nor heard word of her mother or her older sister since she was 8 years old. At 17, Undine Stransky first meets Lucas Coffey, as an intern for Project SERAPHIM, and becomes his assistant six months later. Undine is a student psychologist who is known to be one of the greater minds of her class, exceeding her age level, which is why Lucas becomes so drawn to her. In return, she finds his longevity, abilities, and the philosophical aspects of his personality to be fascinating. Undine strives to be a psychologist and studies both the human and synthetic behavior of the lives that they create in Project SERAPHIM. Lucas and Undine become attached, often spending a lot of alone time with each other, discussing philosophy and psychology, classic literature, and playing Go. Together, they work on creating prototypes for Project SERAPHIM, which later become the synthetics. They soon fall in love with each other, but spend years before they admit this to each other due to Undine’s young age. She even helps him sneak out of the laboratory a couple of times (even though he never tells her that he could leave whenever he wanted); this is strange to him as he has not seen the world beyond concrete walls for nearly 52 years. The outdoors help Lucas Coffey think clearly, and he begins to have an idea: The synths become the pet project of Lucas and Undine Stransky, at 19, working on the prototypes behind the backs of Project SERAPHIM. Despite the dramatic age gap between the two (both physically as well as mentally, as Lucas has been perpetually in his 50s for 271 years now), Lucas Coffey and Undine Stransky admit their love for one another. Undine also acquires her doctorates in behavioral psychology early, now earning her the title of Dr. Undine Stransky. She will later move on to genetics and engineering. A few years later, Undine and Lucas are married. In the year 2046, the first synthetic is “born” -- a Rook. They name it Heimdall. Unlike the other synthetics that are created afterwards, Heimdall’s A.I. is unique, and is seemingly more human than any of the previous prototypes they had produced. Heimdall’s mainframe creates the ability to manifest an Id, Ego, and Super-ego and complies with those intentions, swayed by both his own rationalization and desires. As these personas form, Dr. Undine Stransky works closely with Heimdall, and draws parallels between Freud’s psychic apparatus and the Rook’s behavioral tendencies. The Long Winter, a great war, begins waging by 2056. Caught up in the mess of the new global chaos, Lucas Coffey frantically resumes his work with project, trying to replicate the effects of his own longevity to a prototype. This produces two more of the synthetics: Subjects FREY and FREYJA. Theoretically, they are brother and sister -- twins. However, they both develop a kind of biological anomaly (similar to that of Heimdall’s); FREYJA’s just happens to be more precarious. She kills Frey during one of their test runs, and nearly destroys the entire project altogether in one fell swoop. They refer to her ability to produce fire as “Brísingamen” (from Old Norse, “flaming ornament”. In the mythos, it is the necklace of the goddess, FREYJA). FREYJA is locked up in a fireproof prison cell, also known as the Glass House. Dr. Undine Stransky (34) works as FREYJA’s personal councilor, trying to study the psychology of the synths. Lucas also learns that he is able to dissemble and reassemble FREYJA and tweak with her coding. He can’t reprogram her as her behavioral patterns are hard coded into her programming; the most they can do is erase most of her memory and start from scratch. In doing this, however, it’s almost guaranteed that she’ll fall back into the same behavioral patterns again. Undine doesn’t wish to do this, as it would mean losing the progress she had made with FREYJA. Undine and Lucas have frequent arguments over this. Lucas believes in starting from scratch. Undine wishes to continue. After weeks of conflict and a domestic war of attrition, Undine files for divorce. In spite of this, they continue their work together, but on a more professional level. A year passes, and Undine is making steady progress with FREYJA -- or so she thinks. Undine develops a motherly fondness for her, despite FREYJA’s unstable programming. Mid-year, the fundraisers of the project have decided to cut off the research regarding FREYJA’s mental state. Undine despairs, believing it to be a waste. She seeks help with a fellow researcher who had taken an interest in FREYJA, a man named Dr. Jonathan Quayle. Quayle had been sneaking into the Glass House to interact with FREYJA on a regular basis. He learns that she has taken a liking for opera, and utilizes it to his own advantage by brainwashing her. Before the termination of FREYJA can happen, Dr. Jonathan Quayle agrees to help Undine free her subject. He suggests that Undine play Dido’s Lament from Dido and Aeneas to calm FREYJA. However, what the song truly does is trigger a psychotic episode. She kills Undine and sabotages most of Project SERAPHIM, making it near impossible for them to progress with their research by setting them back several years. Lucas Coffey decides to have FREYJA reset, but she is nowhere to be found in Niflheim and Dr. Jonathan Quayle has gone AWOL. The legacy of Dr. Undine Stransky lives on in the memory of FREYJA’s new identity, Rey. |
